I managed to nabb a Mk6 GTI for a day on Saturday...      it would have been overnight - which is what I really wanted - empty roads and all that - but its been almost continuously booked since it arrived at the local dealer last week and I think they needed to clean it on Friday evening.  Some lucky guy has had it since yesterday though...   So Saturday 10:00am to 4pm will do me fine      I'll be writing up a review with pics shortly after.

Also thanks to Wolsey VW Ipswich for the loan of the car and Robert the Sales Manager who booked me in without hesitation.

I must admit, although I've driven past my local VW dealer I haven't popped in to look at the mk5.5 mk6. I've just spent a small fortune on the house and really don't want to walk into my dealer and feel the absolute need to borrow masses of money and order one. I'll try and avoid them on the roads too for a couple of years I think! Seriously though, I was totally underwhelmed by the black 'normal' Golf when I looked at one so am a bit apprehensive about looking closely at the GTI. The one in my local stealer is silver with 17''ers and thus doesn't really catch one's eye as you drive past.
So I'm really looking forward to your experiences of driving the thing as it's one thing hearing a road testers hype in a magazine, and another thing hearing a balanced view from an owner of a techinically very similar car.

....

I'm very interested in hearing all about the Mk6 GTI but I most definitely won't be buying one - Not because of not liking it but because what I've already got is now very bespoke to what I want my ride to be.

It would be interesting to see how small the 17s look on the mk6 due to its more slab sides compared to the mk5. They prob look very small especially on the Silver one. Shame you had not got a few photos as all my local dealers have black ones fully speced.

I'm going to try and book a demo for an hour or so. My local stealer has a white one and the other dealer has a silver one in the showroom. The white looks great and sooo much better than in any picture.

mines booked now, 3.30 on sat. VW have this all singing and dancin online booking service where you pick the time and date that suits, only once you have completed it they end up calling and making a time that suits them !! and my dealer isn't flexible, they have to come with me and its only a short drive .....

I wonder how the review will compare to the Pistonheads review:

http://www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=52&i=20017

It's not exactly complimentary.

its also a lot of money, wasn't the mkv just under 17k when it was first released ? It makes the Focus RS seem a bargin.
