It's more the offset that will cause the rubbing.
ET41 8X18 235 40 18 Some reports of rubbing but I didn't get any. Tyre does poke out of the front arch a few mm
ET44 8X19 235 35 19 No rubbing, tyre sits more or less flush with front arch.

SEAT Potenzas are ET53  I think, so no chance of rubbing on a Golf.
